DESCRIPTION:With thanks to Flame Marketing\n\n\nOverview\nSince farm funding has changed\, many farms are considering diversifying to supplement their incomes and build more resilient businesses. Even farms with well-established diversification plans may be thinking about marketing for the first time\, or considering how improving their marketing could help them to grow their business. In this workshop\, we will consider the importance of marketing for farm businesses at different stages\, covering: \n  \n\nAn outline of various marketing approaches\, including the pros and cons of each and some easy wins\nSome successful examples of agricultural marketing\nFirst steps / next steps in starting or promoting your marketing\n\n  \nFollowing the presentation\, there will be an open forum for attendees to ask questions. Questions may also be submitted in advance\, when registering for the event. After the event\, Flame Marketing will send out a copy of their workbook\, to help with creating a basic marketing plan. \n\n\nEligibility\nThis workshop is available to any farmer or land manager in Devon currently in receipt of BPS payments. \nTo be eligible to participate in the Future Farming Resilience project and receive subsequent 1:1 support or attend further workshops\, you will be required to complete a Monitoring Information form. Forms will be provided by your advisor\, at a workshop\, or emailed to you after an online workshop. Please ensure forms are completed swiftly. Please be aware that BIP may limit further access to specialist workshops or 1:1 advice\, if the form is not completed. \nIf you have any questions please call us on 01837 659 059 or email team@businessinfopoint.co.uk. SUMMARY:Soil Structure and Health
DESCRIPTION:Maximising soil structure and health for productivity\, profitability and natural flood management\n\n\nMost flooding and pollution incidents in Cornwall and Devon have been caused\, at least in part\, by significant soil compaction. Poor soil structure and condition also impact on farm productivity\, business profitability and biodiversity. At this event the role of good soil structure and health in natural flood management are considered\, both in the Mevagissey catchment and the wider Cornwall and Devon landscape. \nAs well as natural flood management the event will look at the role soil health has on maximising nutrient use efficiencies. By maximising these nutrient inputs\, land managers can ensure better crops and minimise the impact on the wider environment. \nJoel Williams is an independent plant and soil health educator providing lectures\, workshops and consultation on soil management\, plant nutrition and integrated approaches of sustainable food production. Joel has a particular interest in farming systems that manage soil biology along with crop and soil nutrition to optimise plant immunity and soil function\, and has extensive practical experience in Australia\, UK and Canada. \nThe presentation will cover soil structure and soil health\, and discuss nitrogen and nutrient use efficiencies. \nTimings are: \n\n17:30 – 18:30 – Arrival and registration. Early supper (sandwiches & hot drinks)\n18:30 – 19:45 – Joel Williams talk. (Soil biology for natural flood management & nitrogen / nutrient use efficiencies)\n19:45 End and Q&A\n\n  \n  \nEligibility: \nThis workshop is available to any farmer or land manager in Devon\, Somerset\, Dorset\, Cornwall\, or the Isles of Scilly currently in receipt of BPS payments. Their inclusion and attractive payment rate within Defra’s Sustainable Farming Incentive means they are an option to consider carefully within any farm business. \nFarms in the South West also have the highest proportions of hedgerows in England and\, again\, hedgerow management options under SFI could be a valuable addition to your post-BPS farm income. \nThis workshop will support any farmers considering herbals leys and hedgerow management on their farm. \nIt will include: \n\nThe details of herbal leys and hedgerow options under SFI – what you could earn\, what you would be required to do under SAM3 and HRW1\, 2 and 3\nFollowing a pasty lunch\, a farm walk to examine and discuss the practical management of herbal leys and hedgerows\n\nThis farm event has an outside component so please come appropriately dressed. \n  \nEligibility: \nThis workshop is available to any farmer or land manager in Devon\, Somerset\, Dorset\, Cornwall\, or the Isles of Scilly currently in receipt of BPS payments. \nTo be eligible to participate in the Future Farming Resilience project and receive subsequent 1:1 support or attend further workshops\, you will be required to complete a Monitoring Information form. As part of the Agricultural Transition\, Defra introduced the Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) in 2022 with the aim to support farmers looking after the natural environment in the course of their farming. \nIn this free workshop\, we will look at the options available under the Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI)\, including a deep-dive into the six new standards being introduced in 2023\, and how these can be applied on your farm. \nThe six additional standards to be introduced in 2023 include: \n\nhedgerows standard\nintegrated pest management standard\nnutrient management standard\narable and horticultural land standard\nimproved grassland standard\nlow input grassland standard\n\nUnder the new schemes\, on farm payments can reach an average of £200/ha depending on options chosen. During the session we will explore the payments offered\, go through the application process\, and what is required to comply . This will conclude with a farm walk where we will take a practical look at how SFI can work alongside the current farm practices. \nTimings: \n\n11.00am – Arrival\, tea and coffee\n11.30am to 12.30pm – Presentation on SFI\n12.30pm to 1.00pm – Pasty lunch\n1.00pm – 2.00pm – Farm walk\n\nEligibility: \nThis workshop is available to any farmer or land manager in Devon\, Somerset\, Dorset\, Cornwall\, or the Isles of Scilly currently in receipt of BPS payments. \nIf you have any questions please call us on 01837 659 059 or email team@businessinfopoint.co.uk. SUMMARY:Understanding Your Soils and the SFI Soil Standard
DESCRIPTION:Free workshop aimed at helping farmers and landowners understand their soils.\n\n\nOne of South West’s less visible but important assets is its soils. From the peat soils of Dartmoor\, to the Somerset Levels they all provide the raw material for both food production and the environment we all enjoy. \nMaintaining and improving the regions soils will be a feature of the Environmental Land Management Scheme (ELM’s) that Defra will be introducing over the next 3 years as the Basic Payment Scheme method of supporting farmers is removed. \n2022 brings the first element of this change with the introduction of grassland and arable soils standards under the Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) which is open to all farmers (including those currently in Countryside Stewardship). Applications open in June. \nIt offers payments between £28 and £58/ha on improved grass and £22 and £40/ ha on arable land for documenting the condition of the soil and testing for soil organic matter\, introducing herbal grass mixtures\, and reducing soil erosion. BIP is offering these workshops aimed at helping farmers and landowners understand their soils and how they will be able take part in this first element of the SFI. \nThe workshop will cover: \n\nThe requirements of the SFI soil standards\nWhat you already have on farm to help comply with the scheme\nHow to assess soil texture by hand\nTaking representative soil samples\nHow to assess compaction and run off on your farm\nAssessing soil health through earthworm counts\nCreating or improving your soil management plan\nHerbal leys and cover crops\n\nEligibility: \nThis workshop is available to any farmer or land manager in Devon\, Somerset\, Dorset\, Cornwall\, or the Isles of Scilly currently in receipt of BPS payments. \nIf you have any questions please call us on 01837 659 059 or email team@businessinfopoint.co.uk.
