SUMMARY:Soil Structure and Health
DESCRIPTION:Maximising soil structure and health for productivity\, profitability and natural flood management\n\n\nMost flooding and pollution incidents in Cornwall and Devon have been caused\, at least in part\, by significant soil compaction. Poor soil structure and condition also impact on farm productivity\, business profitability and biodiversity. At this event the role of good soil structure and health in natural flood management are considered\, both in the Mevagissey catchment and the wider Cornwall and Devon landscape. \nAs well as natural flood management the event will look at the role soil health has on maximising nutrient use efficiencies. By maximising these nutrient inputs\, land managers can ensure better crops and minimise the impact on the wider environment. \nJoel Williams is an independent plant and soil health educator providing lectures\, workshops and consultation on soil management\, plant nutrition and integrated approaches of sustainable food production. Joel has a particular interest in farming systems that manage soil biology along with crop and soil nutrition to optimise plant immunity and soil function\, and has extensive practical experience in Australia\, UK and Canada. \nThe presentation will cover soil structure and soil health\, and discuss nitrogen and nutrient use efficiencies. \nTimings are: \n\n17:30 – 18:30 – Arrival and registration. Early supper (sandwiches & hot drinks)\n18:30 – 19:45 – Joel Williams talk. (Soil biology for natural flood management & nitrogen / nutrient use efficiencies)\n19:45 End and Q&A\n\n  \n  \nEligibility: \nThis workshop is available to any farmer or land manager in Devon\, Somerset\, Dorset\, Cornwall\, or the Isles of Scilly currently in receipt of BPS payments. \nTo be eligible to participate in the Future Farming Resilience project and receive subsequent 1:1 support or attend further workshops\, you will be required to complete a Monitoring Information form. Forms will be provided by your advisor\, at a workshop\, or emailed to you after an online workshop. Please ensure forms are completed swiftly.
