Establishing and maintaining herbal leys on your land

Herbal leys have become an increasingly popular component within farming rotations on South West farms.

Their inclusion and attractive payment rate within Defra’s Sustainable Farming Incentive, as well as within Countryside Stewardship, means they are an option to consider carefully within any farm business.This workshop will support any farmers considering incorporating or adding to herbals leys on their farm.

It will include:

  • An introduction to what herbal leys are, and the advantages they offer
  • Management of herbal leys for soil health, forage quality, drought resistance, and diversity
  • Common challenges encountered with herbal leys and how to avoid or manage them

The presentation will be followed by a light lunch and then a field walk to examine different herbal leys, their constituent species and their management.

NB attendees are asked to bring a folding or camping chair to this event

Eligibility:

This workshop is available to any farmer or land manager in Devon, Somerset, Dorset, Cornwall, or the Isles of Scilly currently in receipt of BPS payments.

To be eligible to participate in the Future Farming Resilience project and receive subsequent 1:1 support or attend further workshops, you will be required to complete a Monitoring Information form. Forms will be provided by your advisor, at a workshop, or emailed to you after an online workshop. Please ensure forms are completed swiftly. Please be aware that BIP may limit further access to specialist workshops or 1:1 advice, if the form is not completed.
