DESCRIPTION:Join us at Hole Farm\, by kind permission of Richard Sampson\, for an insightful and engaging farm walk focused on countryside stewardship and rural wellbeing support.\n\n\nThis event will feature key speakers and experts from a variety of sectors: \n\nAn introductory talk will discuss how Hole Farm has opted into the Countryside Stewardship scheme followed by a farm walk to showcase practical examples on the land.\nJo Garlick from the Forestry Commission will lead discussions on woodland management and sustainability.\nRichard Sampson will share his experiences with the Farming Community Network (FCN).\nDavid Pett – Agricultural Advisor – Future Farming Resilience – Business Information Point\nPC Lucy Wyatt & PC Lee Skinner – Rural Affairs Policing Team – Rural Crime will discuss rural crime prevention and safety strategies.\nNikki Rattenbury and Sam Younger from Heart of the South West (HoTSW) Trading Standards will provide insights on trading standards relevant to local farmers and landowners.\n\n  \nFood and refreshments will be provided\, and please submit any dietary requirements via our booking form by Tuesday the 8th of October. \nThe Rural Support and Wellbeing project\, run by the Heart of the South West Trading Standards service\, aims to raise awareness of the rural support services available to the farming community\, through specialist workshops and representation at rural events\, such as livestock markets and agricultural shows. \nThis project is being delivered in Cornwall\, Devon\, Dorset\, and Somerset as part of the Future Farming Resilience programme\, funded by DEFRA to support farmers and land managers. SUMMARY:Soil Workshop with Symbiosis Soil Lab
DESCRIPTION:This is part of a series of specialist soil workshops that will introduce farmers and landowners to the basics of soil microbiology.\n\n\nThis is part of a series of specialist soil workshops that will introduce farmers and landowners to the basics of soil microbiology\, and the practical steps that you can take to improve soil health. The workshop will include an on-farm walk\, live soil sample analysis\, and discussions on the science behind soil health. \nSoil Workshop: Led by Symbiosis Soil Lab\, an innovative mobile laboratory\, this workshop will introduce you to soil microbiology and the benefits of soil biodiversity. Symbiosis Soil Lab operates the only known Soil Microbiology Food Web Mobile Lab and they specialise in regenerating life into soils. \nWill Luke from the Apricot Centre CIC\, will be leading a session on the basics of soil microbiology: explaining how microbes evolve and their relationships to each other\, and the help we can give them by creating an environment where they can thrive. Will has been dairy farming for 30 years both as a tenant and landowner. Trained in agriculture\, qualified in regenerative land management at the Apricot Centre\, successfully implementing sustainable practices across the farm for the last decade improving resilience and biodiversity whilst importantly maintaining output and profit. \nThis workshop is hosted in collaboration with the Apricot Centre CIC\, a 67-acre mixed farm in South Devon providing both biodynamic/organic food to 300 households through box scheme and regular market stall. Their aim is to inspire by providing opportunities for free training and business support for land workers and farms with a yearly student cohort of 180+ students. \n  \nFarm Walk: Carolyn Richards will show us around Ashridge Court Farm\, where Carolyn farms Belted Galloway and Red Devon cattle and is passionate about restoring habitats like Culm Grassland and adjoining wet woodland which are home to rare species such as willow tits and redstarts. The farm is participating in a silvopasture trial\, a farmer-led project with six other farms looking to evidence the benefits of silvopasture. Carolyn is currently working with the Agri Innovation Programme advisors to explore future opportunities. The workshop will include an on-farm walk\, live soil sample analysis\, and discussions on the science behind soil health. \nSoil Workshop: Led by Symbiosis Soil Lab\, an innovative mobile laboratory\, this workshop will introduce you to soil microbiology and the benefits of soil biodiversity. Symbiosis Soil Lab operates the only known Soil Microbiology Food Web Mobile Lab and they specialise in regenerating life into soils. \nWill Luke from the Apricot Centre CIC\, will be leading a session on the basics of soil microbiology: explaining how microbes evolve and their relationships to each other\, and the help we can give them by creating an environment where they can thrive. \nThis workshop is hosted in collaboration with the Apricot Centre CIC\, a 67-acre mixed farm in South Devon providing both biodynamic/organic food to 300 households through box scheme and regular market stall. Their aim is to inspire by providing opportunities for free training and business support for land workers and farms with a yearly student cohort of 180+ students. \n  \nFarm Walk: Martyn Bragg will show us around Shilingford Organics which has been Organic since 1998\, growing 50 acres of organic veg and employing 10 FTEs. It grows arable crops in a stockless rotation; however it also started growing vegetables 25 years ago and now that is the major part of the farm. It started planting an agroforestry system in 2002 and now has over 400 apple trees as well as other top fruit. \nThe vegetables are grown in a 5 or 6 year rotations growing many types of veg\, salad and herbs. \nBeing so near Exeter they aim to sell produce direct to local people through their veg box scheme/online shop and various Farmers markets. They also supply other box schemes and small local food retailers.
