Tourism is at the heart of the South Hams and West Devon regions. From independently-owned holiday rentals and cafés to hotels and visitor attractions, the tourism economy supports jobs, communities and the character of our area.
We are working in partnership with South Hams District and West Devon Borough Councils to deliver an in-depth study of the visitor economy across both districts.
The aim is simple but powerful: to understand what’s really happening on the ground, identify the biggest barriers facing tourism businesses, and ensure future investment and support genuinely meets local needs.

There are three ways you can get involved
Building on strong foundations
Both councils already play an active role in supporting the visitor economy. This includes:
- UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) initiatives that provide funding and practical support for small businesses
- Investment in promotion and marketing to raise the profile of the area
- Participation in county-wide partnerships such as the Devon Local Visitor Economy Partnership (LVEP)
- A focus on clean growth, active travel, and smarter, data-driven decision making
This study is about going further. By listening directly to businesses, the councils want to clearly identify the challenges holding the sector back and explore how future investment and support can be shaped to strengthen the visitor economy for everyone.
Your voice matters
No two tourism businesses are the same. The challenges faced by a self-catering owner may be very different from those of a hotel, attraction or tour provider.

Join one of our Tourism Symposium events, which will shed light on the barriers within the sector and establish ideas around future investment, business advice, and initiatives to support growth. This is an excellent opportunity to make your voice heard. Attendees will be encouraged to share their views and take a proactive role in discussions with fellow tourism businesses and stakeholders.
